LASPNET LAUNCHES REPORT ON ACCESS TO JUSTICE NEEDS FOR THE YOUTH IN UGANDA: VULNERABILITY, POVERTY AND CORRUPTION HINDRANCES

The largest proportion of Uganda’s population (78%) is comprised of youths who overtime have been exposed to a number of vulnerabilities such as poverty. Given their lack of employment and abuse of drugs, SGBV among others, many are usually caught on the wrong side of the law yet lack the capacity to fight back. NEW LASPNET BOARD OF DIRECTORS RECEIVES INSTRUMENTS OF POWER

Hon. Justice Remmy Kasule, an honorary member of LASPNET and Chairperson of the Uganda Law Council re-affirmed the place of legal aid in the Access to Justice arena given its positive contribution to uplifting the plight of the voiceless. This was during the handover ceremony for the new LASPNET Board of Directors held at Country Lake Resort Hotel in Garuga on 23rd November 2018

    On 26th October 2018, LASPNET members convened at Hotel Africana for the 9th Annual General Assembly (AGM) of the Network. This was an electoral AGM that saw a new Board of Directors ushered in to serve for the next two years (2018-2020). The AGM is the highest policy making organ of the Network that discusses and recommends issues for implementation by the Board of Directors. It was attended by 64 participants (26 male and 38 female) with representation from 30 organizations

    Despite reforms by the Judiciary to ease dispensation of justice, the institution is still grappling with delays in disposing off cases, corruption, high prison congestion and few judicial officers among other challenges.

ABOUT LASPNET

The Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET) is a national member NGO established in 2004 to provide strategic linkages and a collaboration framework for the Legal Aid Service Providers and maintain a common front to interface with various actors in the Justice, Law and Order Sector in Uganda. It targets three critical aspects of coordination: a collective role bringing together different LASPs for solidarity in strategizing, sharing lessons and experiences, while minimizing duplication; capacitating them through collaborative research and analysis ; as well as documenting, providing needed feedback, and amplifying voice on key issues regarding access to justice/legal aid at regional, national or international level.
