LASPNET Launches Access to Justice Manifesto ahead of 2016 Elections

In a bid to propel issues of access to justice onto the agendas for 2016 electoral candidates, LASPNET launched an “Access to Justice Manifesto” at a conference held on 22nd October 2015 at the Kampala Serena Hotel. It preceded the 6th Annual General Meeting for the Network.
LASPNET Meets with ROLE UK

On 17th September 2015, LASPNET met with a team from Role UK which is conducting research into areas prioritized for development in the rule of law space in Uganda and to identify Ugandan project partners they may be able to work with. The team consisted of Nigel Priestly, Ranjit Uppal and Charlotte Cracombe.
The LASPNET team consisted of Ms.Sylvia Namubiru Mukasa, the Executive Director, and Ms.Berna Bakidde Kiberu, the Programmes Manager.
LASPNET 6th AGM Held at Kampala Serena Hotel

Members of the Legal Aid Service Providers Network converged at Kampala Serena Hotel on 23rd October 2015 for their 6th Annual General Meeting. The meeting sought to review progress achieved in the period July 2014 to June 2015 and set the pace for the activities in July 2015 to June 2016.
LASPNET Holds Staff Training

On 9th till 11th September 2015, LASPNET held a three day residential training for all staff at Esella Country Hotel in Najeera.
The training which was facilitated by Mr.Godfrey Bwanika from Uganda Management Institute was aimed at equipping staff with the latest skills needed to propel the activities of the Secretariat forward and serve members more efficiently and effectively.

21 September , 2015Following the expiry of the LASPNET Corporate Strategic Plan 2010-2015 in June this year, the network has embarked on the process to develop another one to steer its strategic direction for the period 2015-2020. This was revealed by the Ms.Sylvia Namubiru- Mukasa the Executive Director at a strategic planning meeting with the consultants held at Piato Restaurant on 8th September 2015, to kick start the process.

On the 7th of August 2015 LASPNET Board of Director held breakfast meeting with Chief Justice of Uganda Hon Bert Katureebe. The meeting took place at the High court building -Kampala and it lasted for about 2 hours. The objective of the meeting was to congratulate his Lordship upon elevation to the office of the Chief Justice and to use the opportunity to share experiences and lessons of the Legal service provision in Uganda and to call upon the leadership of the Justice Law and Order Sector to fast track enactment of Legal aid policy and law. -

Legal aid is the provision of free or subsidised legal services to mainly poor and vulnerable people who cannot afford the services of paid lawyers. The right to legal aid is well entrenched in the International and Regional human rights treaty framework to most of which Uganda is a state party. The provision of legal aid addresses the concerns of the poor and vulnerable by focusing on challenges arising from: affordability of user costs, lack of legal representation, and alienation due to technicalities, language and ignorance of legal rights. Poverty, ignorance of the law, the effect of armed conflict, disability or other vulnerability or marginalization are some of the factors that undermine access to justice for the majority of Ugandans. The provision of Legal Aid will greatly contribute to the empowerment of individuals and communities – a key ingredient of poverty reduction efforts thereby contributing to economic development. -
