Human Rights Focus(HURIFO) notes with grave concern the continuing wave of insecurity that has so far claimed lives and left score of people with serious injuries in and around big farms such as in Karatye, obira west, Alingiri and Lii in Nwoya districtand Apaa again in Amuru district. The insecurity manifest in continuous arrests,torture, arsons, and sometimes killing by some UPDF soldiers, individual wealthier people guarded by police or army.A case in point involved a 66year old Jathim, Pyrino Akwanga of Obira East Village, Latoro parish, Got Apwoyo Sub county Nwoya district who has lived in the area since1970s.

“Closing Space for Civil Society and Media in East Africa: Forging a Collaborative Response”

We, more than 60 civil society organisation and media representatives from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda working on human rights, democratic development, transparency, digital media, women and youth empowerment, legal aid, litigation and other issues of public interest are gathered in Nairobi to express our firm resolve to stand together in solidarity as civil society and media.

On 19th January 2018, LASPNET Board members and the Secretariat met with a team from the Democratic Governance Facility led by Mr.Wimm Stoffers, the Head of Facility. The meeting was held to introduce Mr.Esben Harboe, the new Program Learning Manager in charge of sphere 3 on Upholding human rights, Access to Justice and Gender Equality.

04 December , 2017One of the objective of LASPNET’s current strategic plan is to promote research and knowledge management to support evidence based programming and advocacy for legal aid and access to justice. The Network in collaboration with other justice system actors has been at the forefront of advocating for the enactment of the National Legal Aid Policy to address the many challenges faced by the poor, vulnerable and marginalized in accessing justice in Uganda.
