To strengthen coordination and networking of LASPs, harmonisation and standardisation of legal aid service provision by the different service providers, lobbying and advocacy to facilitate a favourable legal and policy environment.

LASPNET elects New Board of Directors

On Friday 21st November 2014LASPNET elected its 4th Board of Directors. Mr. Sam Nsubuga, the Chief Executive Officer for the African Center for Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (ACTV) becomes the new Chairperson for the Board of Directors, replacing Ms Salima Namusobya, who has served in the position since 2012.

A call to expedite Bill on legal aid provision

KAMPALA - Government has been urged to fast-track the passing of the National Legal Aid Policy and Bill into law to help regularize the activities of legal aid providers. Lady Justice Solomy Balungi Bossa of the Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court made the remarks while opening the 5th Annual General Assembly (AGM) of the Legal Aid Service Providers’ Network at Protea Hotel in Kampala on Saturday.

Five Convicted for Aiding FGM

In the wake of new cases of female genital mutilation (FGM) in Sebei sub-region, police have intensified operations to net the perpetrators of the vice.Seven people, including suspected FGM traditional surgeons, victims and their parents were last week rounded up in Matigot village, Kaptany Sub-county in Kapchorwa District.

    One of the most fundamental freedoms protected by the Constitution is personal liberty. This right may only be derogated in accordance with the law set out in Article 23 of the Constitution[1]. The Constitution also protects an accused person’s right to a ‘fair, speedy and public hearing’. This includes the presumption of innocence until guilt is proved[2]. It sets out robust enforcement mechanisms for the enforcement of individual rights.

ABOUT LASPNET

The Legal Aid Service Providers Network (LASPNET) is a national member NGO established in 2004 to provide strategic linkages and a collaboration framework for the Legal Aid Service Providers and maintain a common front to interface with various actors in the Justice, Law and Order Sector in Uganda. It targets three critical aspects of coordination: a collective role bringing together different LASPs for solidarity in strategizing, sharing lessons and experiences, while minimizing duplication; capacitating them through collaborative research and analysis ; as well as documenting, providing needed feedback, and amplifying voice on key issues regarding access to justice/legal aid at regional, national or international level.
